Beer on tap
Draught beers served fresh — the heart of the house since 1881.
Ferrara · Piazza Savonarola
Since 1881, in Piazza Savonarola at the foot of the Este Castle: a historic beer hall where the people of Ferrara have been meeting for almost a century and a half.
Our story
Birraria Giori was founded in 1881 in Piazza Savonarola, in the heart of Ferrara — a square that has been a marketplace since the Middle Ages. A description dated 1 March 1881 tells of “a beer establishment of this Giori” where, among merchants and fine company, one could sit in the shadow of the Este Castle and admire all its magnificence.
It was Guelfo Giori who gave the beer hall its name and brought it to prominence for over a century. Towards the end of the nineteenth century he obtained permission to build an iron gazebo, which became an open-air terrace: shelter from the sun and a place to refresh, right in front of the Castle.
In over 140 years the beer hall has changed hands only three times, always keeping the same elements: the terrace on the square and a simple idea of hospitality — beer and sandwiches, done well. Today Giori carefully chooses local suppliers, from Forno Moretti's bread to Ghirardi's cured meats.
The place
A handful of outdoor tables in front of the Castle: the best way to experience Ferrara with a beer in hand.
Piazza Savonarola has been a marketplace since the Middle Ages — the beer hall has been part of it for over 140 years.

Three managements in over a century, one single idea: fresh beer and well-made sandwiches.
Recognition
In September 2021 the City of Ferrara presented Birraria Giori with the Historic Shop plaque, recognising its continuity — one of the oldest food-and-drink establishments in the city — and its bond with the square and the Castle.
It is a recognition we share with the people of Ferrara and with those who come from afar: whoever sits at our tables finds the same way of welcoming guests as almost a hundred and fifty years ago.
